Cole Moore and Matt Erickson split the NASCAR Late Model features at All American Speedway in Roseville, California, on August 15, 2020. Derek Thorn recovered from a spin to earn his 45th SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour victory in the JM Environmental 150, part of an eight-feature program.
The second round of NASCAR racing at Roseville took place behind closed grandstands, with streaming coverage on AllAmericanSpeedway.TV and SpearsRacing.TV.
In temperatures above 100 degrees, Loomis driver Rick Scribner led the opening lap of the first Late Model feature. Roseville’s Shannon Mansch passed him on the outside on lap two after Scribner slid exiting turn four. Chris Scribner and opening-night winner Cole Moore also passed Rick Scribner, dropping him to fourth.
Moore took the lead on lap nine, with fast qualifier Randy Hedrick of Reno, Nevada, advancing to second. La Grange’s Matt Erickson moved into fourth with 10 laps remaining, but no late caution closed the field. Moore won ahead of Hedrick. Erickson did not report to post-race inspection, leaving Mansch third, Galt’s Matt Wendt fourth and Chris Scribner fifth.
An eight-car inversion put 17-year-old Kylie Daniels and 16-year-old Aidan Daniels on the front row for the second 35-lap feature. After an unsuccessful start, Rick and Chris Scribner inherited the front row. Rick Scribner led the first lap, while Moore advanced from eighth to second by lap five.
Rick Scribner pulled away as Moore led the pack behind him. Three-wide racing dropped Erickson to fourth. Hedrick moved into second on lap 15, while brake problems dropped Moore to fifth.
Hedrick caught Rick Scribner and took the lead on lap 21, with Erickson then passing Scribner for second. On lap 25, a red flag stopped the race when Rick Scribner’s car caught fire at the top of turn one. He escaped without injury.
Chris Scribner restarted alongside Hedrick and briefly challenged before Erickson passed him on the inside for second. Kylie Daniels spun in turn two a lap later, bringing another caution.
Erickson took the lead from Hedrick after contact in a side-by-side battle on the final restart. Wendt then tried to pass between Hedrick and Chris Scribner for third, but contact with Scribner sent Wendt spinning into turn one. The race ended on lap 29, with Erickson ahead of Hedrick, Moore, Aidan Daniels and Kylie Daniels. It was Erickson’s first Pro Late Model feature victory in California since June 2019.
Thorn won the shortened JM Environmental 150 against a 22-car SRL field. He led the opening eight laps before a red flag for Trevor Huddleston’s impact with the turn-three wall while running fourth. Huddleston, the 2019 California State champion, was uninjured.
Eric Schmidt used a lap-20 caution to pass Tyler Fabozzi for second. Linny White challenged Schmidt but could not complete the pass. Thorn led Schmidt, White, Cole Moore and Fabozzi into the scheduled lap-50 break.
Schmidt passed Thorn on the outside to lead lap 51 after the restart. Thorn retook the lead exiting turn two on lap 55, one lap before Idaho’s Zach Telford spun. Thorn led the restart and White advanced to second. Another Telford spin brought another caution, after which White led lap 79 from the outside.
Thorn edged ahead at the line on lap 80 as a caution flew for backstretch debris. A further debris caution preceded a restart pileup involving Jacob Gomes, Fabozzi, John Moore and Jonathan Mawhinney on the frontstretch. The incident brought the scheduled lap-100 break forward by 11 laps.
Schmidt spun after the break, dropping out of the top five and allowing Cole Moore to move into second. Thorn pulled away before spinning from the lead in turn two on lap 102. Officials identified oil around the track as a possible cause, prompting a lengthy stoppage.
Thorn restarted at the rear. Carlos Vieira passed Cole Moore on the outside to lead lap 103, but Moore continued to challenge. The pair collided while racing for the lead on the backstretch a few laps later, returning Thorn to first. Thorn held off Tracy Bolin on the final restart and won ahead of John Moore, Gomes, Dean Thompson and Bolin.
Loomis driver Kenna Mitchell won her first Jr. Late Model feature at All American Speedway. The 2019 Bandolero champion passed Fort Bragg’s Lane Anderson with two laps remaining, drawing alongside on the frontstretch on lap 22 and clearing him exiting turn two. Anderson had led from the start. Aidan Daniels, the 2019 series runner-up, finished third ahead of Trey Daniels.
Josh Whitfield won the 30-lap Super Stock feature after starting sixth. Phil Wilkins took the lead from third on the grid by lap two, but Whitfield worked through the field and passed him on lap 10.
Opening-night winner Jill Schmidt passed Tim Walters for third before a lap-15 competition caution, then challenged Wilkins for second. Andrew Kemp spun with fewer than 10 laps remaining. Schmidt took second on the restart but could not catch Whitfield, who dedicated the win to his late grandfather, Ronald Whitfield. Walters finished third, followed by 2019 champion Andrew Peeler and Wilkins.
Ray Molina of Roseville, the 2019 F4 champion, swept both 20-lap features for the four-cylinder cars. Starting fifth in the opener, he watched Mario Novelli pass Rocklin polesitter John Sproule for the early lead. Nevada’s Rich Innis took over on lap five before Molina passed him on the outside on lap eight. Molina won ahead of Innis, Jerry Nunes, Vic Theberge and Brian Spencer.
Theberge led early in the second F4 race but damaged the front of his car after driving through the cones in turns three and four on lap three. He retained the lead through a debris caution. Molina passed Innis for second, caught Theberge by lap 13 and made the winning pass on lap 14. Innis finished second, followed by Theberge, Nunes and Spencer.
Sacramento’s Jason Philpot led all 15 laps for his second consecutive Jaws Gear & Axle Limited Modified victory. Josh Blackwood and Jon Yourd completed the field. American Racer Tire awards went to Phil Wilkins, Vic Theberge and Brian Spencer.
