Sam Mayer won the ARCA Menards Series West race at Sonoma Raceway in the No. 23 SPS/GMS Fabrication/Spencer Clark Driven Chevrolet. He led three times for 37 laps and won by 0.930 seconds, with Tyler Reif, Sean Hingorani, William Sawalich and Jack Wood completing the top five.
The 21-year-old Wisconsin native started from pole after a qualifying lap of 1:17 at 92.873 mph. An early slip in Turn 4A handed the lead to Joe Gibbs Racing driver Sawalich before the first caution on lap 6 for debris.
Sawalich led the next 20 laps. A lap-23 caution, after Nick Joanides went off in Turn 10 and into the tire barriers, brought the leaders to pit road. Another caution followed when Brent Crews’s No. 15 Venturini Motorsports Toyota lost a tire.
Mayer regained the lead on lap 34 when Noah Gragson slid up in Turn 7. He then held off challenges from Hingorani, Sawalich and Reif through two more cautions, including one on lap 63, and an overtime restart.
The victory was Mayer’s second in ARCA West and his first since winning at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
